Dark Alchemy Bristol is an independent event series promoting dark ambient / ritual / industrial / noise / drone / esoteric / experimental artists, both local and international.
Established in 2017, the Dark Alchemy event series is co-curated by Ellen Southern and Tom Bush from Dead Space Chamber Music (dark neoclassical / ritual) and Tommy Edwards aka Tommy Creep (modular synth).
Our core events are held in unique spaces including crypts and churches, immersing audiences in the acoustics, aesthetic and atmosphere of each. The aim is create a dark musical alchemy: to hold open a ceremonial space for bringing distinctive musical elements together, creating a unique and transformative experience.
Proceeds to be donated to the Churches Conservation Trust.

Album art: Woman Practicing Geometry by Ellen Southern (Dead Space Chamber Music)
The drawing is based on an illuminated manuscript from the 14th century of Greek mathematician Euclid's (323–283 BC) Elements, which was first translated from the Arabic by the local natural philosopher Adelard of Bath (1080-1152). He introduced this and many other ancient works of alchemy, mathematics and astronomy to Western Europe, and is known as one of the first to introduce the Arabic numerical system. He returned from his extensive travels with new philosophical questions that would later give rise to an English Renaissance.
The woman, an allegory of Geometry, is shown holding a compass and square, with nine geometric shapes on her cauldron-like table. This resonates with the Dark Alchemy IV event as the programme presents live performances by nine artists / groups.
Album art also features images from the Churches Conservation Trust archive. The Dark Alchemy event series has developed symbiotically with the trust, with events raising awareness and funds to support the work of protecting and maintaining so many sacred spaces across the country, including St Thomas the Martyr where Dark Alchemy IV was staged. 2019 sees the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of the trust, the country's pre-eminent trust for the management and repair of historic church properties, with more than 350 Grade 1 listed treasures in their care.
